A massive metropolis housing close to 1.5 billion inhabitants, and covering 20,000 square miles, the city of Haven is home to a diverse number of races, both indigenous to Earth, and aliens from the far reaches of space. Numerous massive spires reach upward into the heavens, hundreds of stories tall, while a vast complex known as the Undercity stretches below.
Great walls protect the city from roaming mutant creatures and rampaging demon hordes that dwell in the wastelands beyond. Manned artillery and automated defenses dissuade sieges upon the city.
However, even inside the walls, safety is not guaranteed. Criminal enterprises and empires run rampant, fighting amongst one another for territory. Dark cultists summon forth demons of shadow and smoke to do their bidding or reveal eldritch power. Nameless things which are little more than tentacles and mouths are rumored to hide in poorly lit alleys and in the dank sewers.
The city is watched over by the forces of light, a theocratic government established by the Church of Sol. Their agents, priests, police, and monks are dispatched to deal with troublesome areas, while other portions of town are left to their own devices.
Overlooking it all, from their citadels of glass spires, are the corporate authorities, those that trade in stock and flesh, technology and secrets. Their movements create ripples and waves that magnify into typhoons which redistribute wealth and cause changes to the face of the city.
The inhabitants are as varied as the stars in the sky. One is as likely to see a lizardman Sharpheen walking down the street as they are to see an elven popstar with pink hair, or a dwarven biker roaring along on a hoverbike. While there are those that are capable of magic, technology seems to be more prevalent, with holographic images hovering around, and cybernetic augmentation common amongst those that can afford it.
